Overview

SnapWrite AI ("we", "our", "the extension") is a browser extension that helps users improve their writing using AI. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices.

Data We Collect

We collect as little data as possible.

Selected text: When you use an AI action, the selected text is sent to our AI provider (OpenAI or Anthropic) for processing. This text is NOT stored on our servers.
Usage count: We track how many AI actions you use per day, stored locally in your browser (chrome.storage). This never leaves your device.
API key (if provided): If you enter your own API key, it is stored locally in your browser's synced storage and sent only to the corresponding AI provider.
License state: If you activate Pro, your license key and validation status are stored in Chrome storage and checked against our backend.
Settings: Your preferences, including AI provider and local prompt state, are stored locally in your browser.

When Text Leaves Your Browser

SnapWrite sends selected text only after you choose an AI action. The extension truncates AI requests to the first 5,000 characters. Highlight actions are local-only and do not call our backend, OpenAI, Anthropic, or Stripe.

Data We Do NOT Collect

We do NOT collect your browsing history
We do NOT collect personal information (name, email, etc.) through the extension
We do NOT track which websites you visit
We do NOT send full-page DOM snapshots
We do NOT sell any data to third parties
We do NOT use cookies or tracking pixels
We do NOT store the text you process through AI actions

Third-Party Services

Text you process is sent to one of the following AI providers depending on your settings:

OpenAI — Privacy Policy
Anthropic — Privacy Policy

We encourage you to review their privacy policies. When using our backend proxy, text is routed through our server but is not stored in an application database. It is forwarded to the AI provider and discarded by the application after the response is returned.

Data Storage

Extension data is stored in your browser using Chrome's built-in storage APIs (chrome.storage.local and chrome.storage.sync). Chrome sync storage may sync across browsers where you are signed into Chrome.

Billing And License Data

If you purchase Pro, Stripe processes billing data. SnapWrite uses Stripe customer metadata to store license key and license status. License validation requests do not include selected page text.

Permissions

The extension requests these permissions:

activeTab: To read selected text on the current page when you invoke an action
storage: To save your settings and usage count locally
contextMenus: To add right-click menu options for quick access
Host permissions: To call OpenAI, Anthropic, and the SnapWrite backend depending on your selected mode

Children's Privacy

Our extension is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date.
