Overview

SnapWrite AI ("we", "our", "the extension") is a browser extension that helps users improve their writing using AI. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices.

Data We Collect

We collect as little data as possible.

Selected text: When you use an AI action, the selected text is sent to our AI provider (OpenAI or Anthropic) for processing. This text is NOT stored on our servers.
Usage count: We track how many AI actions you use per day, stored locally in your browser (chrome.storage). This never leaves your device.
API key (if provided): If you enter your own API key, it is stored locally in your browser's synced storage and sent only to the corresponding AI provider.
Settings: Your preferences (AI provider, language) are stored locally in your browser.

Data We Do NOT Collect

We do NOT collect your browsing history
We do NOT collect personal information (name, email, etc.) through the extension
We do NOT track which websites you visit
We do NOT sell any data to third parties
We do NOT use cookies or tracking pixels
We do NOT store the text you process through AI actions

Third-Party Services

Text you process is sent to one of the following AI providers depending on your settings:

OpenAI — Privacy Policy
Anthropic — Privacy Policy

We encourage you to review their privacy policies. When using our backend proxy, text is routed through our server but is NOT logged or stored — it is immediately forwarded to the AI provider and discarded.

Data Storage

All extension data is stored locally in your browser using Chrome's built-in storage APIs (chrome.storage.local and chrome.storage.sync). We do not operate databases that store user data.

Permissions

The extension requests these permissions:

activeTab: To read selected text on the current page when you invoke an action
storage: To save your settings and usage count locally
contextMenus: To add right-click menu options for quick access

Children's Privacy

Our extension is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date.
